We are happy to present PAPLA INSTANT MOBILE – a mobile instant messenger that is a part of global Jabber™ messaging networks. It means that you can chat and check presence of any user of any Jabber™ networks in the world. Moreover, thanks to special gateways called ‘transports’ you can chat with your buddies from other instant messenger networks like ICQ, AOL, MSN, Yahoo IM, Gadu-Gadu, Tlen and many others.
Starting using PAPLA INSTANT MOBILE is very easy. What you need is only:
a mobile phone with Java™ and GPRS
PAPLA INSTANT MOBILE Application (soon we’ll tell you how to download it for free)
an Account on any Jabber™ server (you can set up one for free on our jabber.papla.pl server)
PAPLA INSTANT MOBILE works on virtually every Java mobile phone. Below on this page you can find the table with list of phones that we have tested the application with. Don’t worry If your phone is not listed there – you should download and check – the application should work anyway.
The important thing is that you should have GPRS data transmission service active and properly configured. If you are not sure if you have (or you don’t exactly know what does it mean) - contact your service provider customer service.
How to download the application to the telephone?
You can either download the application through WAP or upload it from your PC.
If you are not an expert and don’t know how to connect your phone to the PC you will have to download it by WAP, which is easier and generally recommended.
Send an SMS with PAPLA in its body to the number +48 602 155 081 (charged as a standard SMS to Poland according to your pricing plan). You will get a WapPush message with link to wap page. Upon your connecting to WAP, our system will automatically detect the type of your phone and yield a program version suitable for this model. This method requires an activated data transmission service (check with your operator) and proper configuration of GPRS or CSD.
You can also upload the application from the computer. You have to download the proper set of files (jad and jar) from this page and install them via cable, infrared or bluetooth. Check the telephone user manual to see how to install a Java application.
If your phone is not listed but Papla Instant Messenger runs on it properly, please let us know, we'll update the list.
Starting The Application
If you know, that your phone handles Papla and you have successfully downloaded it – all you have to do is to launch it.
Your application is placed in your phone memory. Just launch it and when phone asks if you want to start the data connection – answer Yes. In order to launch it you should know where your telephone stores the applications. For the most popular models the locations are:
Nokia – Applications menu
Siemens – Entertainment / Games or Data Objects, depending on whow it was loaded to the phone
Motorola – Games and Applications
Sony Ericsson T610 – Games and Others
Registration
After downloading and installing the instant messenger on the mobile phone, you will see the following screen:
If you already have the account on any jabber server (e.g. on our jabber.papla.pl server) – simply choose Login and fill the form fields. The buddies’ list (roster) will be downloaded from your server to the phone and you may start chatting.
If you do not have the account on any jabber server (and if you do not know what it means then you probably don’t have one) you have to create one for you. Choose New account and fill the form fields with the following information:
To navigate use the up [2] and down [8] and from the Options menu choose Edit to enter the data. After you are done, choose OK from the Options menu to confirm.
Login – your nickname, it will identify you when logging and allow your friends to find you in the database.
Password – will help Papla protect your account from unauthorized usage. Password should be typed twice to avoid mistyping.
Email address – you will get the confirmation to this email address as well as information on how to change the password. We neither use your email addresses for advertising nor sell them to other companies.
All fields are mandatory; if you fail to fill any of them your account will not be created.
After you fill the complete form choose from the menu New Account
If the program asks you whether it should connect you to the network answer Yes. Once the connection has been set up, program will try to set up the account. If the user name you have chosen is free, you will be notified about the successful creation of the account. Press any key and chose Login from the menu. If the user name is already taken by someone else, you will have to either choose a different one or choose another jabber server, where there is yet no user with that name.
Please note that your user name must contain at least one letter – user names that consist of digits only are rejected by the server.
How to Log In?
In order to log in, choose Login from the menu and fill the form with your username, password and jabber server address (jabber.papla.pl by default). You may later set the Auto Login option to "on", so not to have to fill the form each time you run Papla.
Contacts
The first screen you see after successful registration and login, is the roster. The roster – called also the buddies list – is the list of your friends who also use instant messengers and who you may chat with.
In order to chat with other people, you have to add them to the roster.
To add a buddy to the roster:
In the menu – choose Add Contact
Choose Papla
In the form you fill user name of your buddy and the jabber server name that he/she has the account on. Then define the group you want to have your buddy in (friends, classmates, family, etc.)
Chosse “Add’ from the menu. Your buddy is added to the list.
Next to the left to the name of your buddy you can see a face-looking icon. This icon, called a status icon, shows the current availability of your friend. This information is checked and updated automatically.
The yellow icon means that your friend is logged and is active, i.e. has sent a message quite lately. The blue color shows that he’s logged in, but has not been active for some time. Red color means that the user is either not logged in or set his status to ‘invisible’
You must know, that after you add a person, who has an account on any jabber sever to the list, you will be added to his list at the same time. In the same way – if he adds you – you will find him on your roster as well.
How to add a buddy who uses other IM standard?
Papla allows communication with other IM systems through gateways. Later you will learn more about gateways, for the time being, you have to know that to add contact from other IM network you have to log in to this network using Papla. Actually, you log through the Papla to the gateway and gateway logs you to the target network.
To do this, first first go to Services in menu, choose the gateway , choose the one that you want to activate and select Activate. Then type your user name / number / UIN and password. Transport is activated.
Then go to Add contact, choose appropriate gateway and enter identifier (login/name/number/UIN etc.) and group under which the buddy will be displayed in your messenger. Press Add and wait until the contact is added.
Since you activate transport, you status is seen by other users of the target network.
To turn off it, go to Services, choose gateway where you don’t want to show your presence information, and select Turn off in the menu. You will still be logged, but nobody in target network will be able to see your status.
If you don’t want to be in the target anymore, go to the Services menu and choose Deactivate. You will not be able to chat with anyone from this network anymore.
You may also add contacts from the networks that are not embedded in this version of Papla Mobile, but only by logging to Papla from a PC. Contacts set up by Papla PC will be available later in Papla mobile. See Papla PC manual for details.
Chat
To start a new conversation, you need to select a contact from your list using the Select option. In most phones you can use also the 5 key. The selected contact will appear against a black background; having selected a contact, choose New chat from the application menu (or 9 key). You will be redirected to a screen that will allow you to start the conversation.
You simply type the message and press Send. The message immediately displays on the screen of your buddy. When your buddy replies, your screen is automatically refreshed to display the message.
The instant messenger allows to have group chats with Papla users – the process of initiating the conversation of this kind is identical to the one described above, with the exception of selecting numerous contacts instead of one.
Parallel Conversations
You can chat simultaneously with many friends in different windows. If the conversation has been initiated by one of your friends, there will be a flashing smoke icon in the corner of your screen, informing you that a new message has arrived. Navigate to the right to sequentially scroll through all open conversations.
If the conversation is started by someone who is not in your roster you can simply choose Add contact from the menu.
To delete a contact, you need to select it with the Select option and then choose the Delete option.
Settings
There are some useful settings available in the Settings menu.
Status – you may set the status that will be presented to your friends. You can also add short information message (such as “I’m back on Monday”, “My new phone number is” etc.)
Phone number – if you would like to participate in our promotions or contests, you can put your phone number. Leave it blank if you are not interested.
Autologin (ON/OFF) – to save your time and effort, you may set the Autologin option on. You will be automatically logged to your account when you run Papla.
Sound (ON/OFF) – toggles the incoming message sound on/off.
All / Active – switches mode of the roster display between showing all or active only buddies.
Reset – resets all settings to defaults. It is useful if you want to log on using the same phone with different credentials.
The Papla messaging system is a part of worldwide instant messaging network Jabber. This network consist of many servers connected one to another by the Internet. Each server has its own address e.g. jabber.papla.pl. Users create their accounts on the servers. Thus, each user is identified by its address that consists of user name and the address of the server, e.g. tom@jabber.papla.pl, monique@jabber.wp.pl , chris@chrome.pl where jabber.papla.pl, jabber.wp.pl, chrome.pl are the names of Jabber servers, where Tom, Monique and Chris have their accounts. Thanks to the Jabber network these people can talk to each other and add one another to their rosters.
Other great advantages of Jabber network are: communication with other IM systems (ICQ/AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Gadu-Gadu) through special gateways and availability of miscellaneous added services: news, weather, dictionaries etc.
In order to chat with users of these networks it is not enough to log on only to Papla. You must log to these networks through the Papla program. You need an account (user id UIN, number + password) in this communicator. Then you type it into Papla and Papla logs you automatically to other network. This is called activation of the gateway.
In the main menu choose Services
Choose the network you want to use (ICQ, Gadu-Gadu, etc.)
You will see the screen with the information about your current status. There are also two commands available: Activate and Deactivate
If you want to activate the gateway choose Activate and fill the form with your user id and password. For example to activate the ICQ transport you must enter your ICQ UIN and password.
Wait for confirmation of successful activation.
Papla server will remember that you activated external gateway and each time you log on to Papla (PC and Mobile) will try to log you also to external network. To cancel this, you must deactivate service in the same way as you activated.
You have to remember though, that most IM systems do not allow to log simultaneously from more that two machines to the same account so when you log to Papla and have transport activated – and you have the dedicated client of another network running - you will be automatically logged out.
If you don’t want to be seen by the users of other network – you may turn the transport temporarily off. From the transport menu choose Turn off – transport is still activated but turned off. To turn it on choose Turn on.
Quitting the application
To quit the instant messenger, choose the Quit option. You will be logged out of the service.
