Since version 3.0 Papla became a part of the worldwide ring of global messaging network named Jabber. This enables connectivity with other instant messengers. Download and enjoy!
Requirements
To use Papla you need:
PC with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP installed
internet connection
an account on any Jabber server
First Steps
Having downloaded the Papla.exe file from our website, save it to a folder of your choice and execute. You don't have to install it - just double-click its icon to launch the program. The program will display the login dialog.
If you don’t have an account on any Jabber server, and if you don’t know what it actually means then you probably don’t have it, in the login screen choose New Account.
To create a free account on jabber.papla.pl you should fill out the form.
Login – your nickname, it will identify you when logging and allow your friends to find you in the database. Password – will help Papla protect your account from unauthorized usage. Password should be typed twice to avoid mistyping. Email address – you will get the confirmation to this email address as well as information on how to change the password. We neither use your email addresses for advertising nor sell them out to other companies.
All fields are mandatory; if you fail to fill any of them your account will not be created.
If the user name (login) you have chosen is free – you will be notified about successful account creation. Press any key and select "Login" from the menu.
If the user name is already occupied by someone else you have to either choose a different one or choose another jabber server, where there is no user with that name. The field with Jabber server address is located in the end of the registration form.
After the registration you get:
Confirmation email
The window with a form to provide more data about yourself. Filling of this form is optional and you may skip it by simply closing the window.
Contacts
After the registration you will see an empty window. This is the main program window. In the tab "Contacts" you can see the roster. The roster is the list of your friends with whom you can chat over the network. Now the roster is empty, because you are a new user and there are no contacts yet. To start chatting with anyone you have to add him to the contact list first.
To find a contact and add it to list:
Press the "Search" icon in the main window. The search window is displayed.
If you don’t know the login of the user you want to add, select the "Search server" option. Go to the next screen and fill appropriate text fields. Server will display the list of users who meet your criteria and you will be able to add chosen people to the list.
If you do know the user name and the server that your friend has their account on – enter the names and press the "Add contact" button.
In both cases the default server is jabber.papla.pl
To the left to the nickname in the contact list, you can see an icon that describes status and type of the server or transport.
The yellow icon means that your friend is logged and is active, i.e. has sent a message quite lately. The blue color shows that he’s logged in, but has not been active for some time. Red color means that the user is either not logged in or set his status to ‘invisible’
The shape of the icon depends on the type of instant messenger that your buddy uses. Later in this page, you will learn more about communications with other instant messaging networks.
You can edit a contact – change its description and group that it belongs to – by clicking on the contact with the right mouse button and choosing ‘Edit’. Changes that you make are saved on the server, so if you log in later from another PC or mobile phone – you will see all the changes that you have applied.
Chat
To start a conversation simply double-click on the contact in the roster window. The chat window will open. You can type your message into a bottom field of the window. You can also add an emoticon – a small picture illustrating your moods. Click the icon with smiling face and you will see a collection of emoticons to add by clicking.
To send a message click 'Enter' or press ctrl + enter on the keyboard. With the ‘Auto-enter’ option turned on, it’s enough to press only enter to send a message.
Leave the window open – when your friend replies the window will automatically refresh.
You can participate in many conversations simultaneously, each of them in a different window. To save space on your screen you can minimize them. When the message arrives, the minimized window tab on the task bar flashes.
Settings
Papla has many settings that allow you to customize it. Click the ‘Tools’ icon and choose the "Configuration" menu item. The preference window with 4 tabs will open.
The Chat Tab
Minimize new window with received message – when your buddy starts a conversation the window with received message will be minimized on the task bar and notify you by flashing. In other case window will be displayed and may disturb you if you write something else.
New message sound – allows to choose a sound that will notify you about new message. Additional option limits notifications only to inactive windows.
New coversation sound – similar to above but notifies about new conversation
Log to archive – check it if you want to save all conversations to archive
The Connection Tab
This tab allows to configure the internet connection in case your network administrator restricts direct (socket) connections. You have to use proxy server in this case. Contact your network administrator to help you configure a proxy server.
The User Tab
Presence information – by checking this option you will be notified when any of your friends changes his status to active. The notification is a text box in Windows system tray.
Change my status automatically – this setting defines the time period of inactivity after which your status information is changed. You may also chose what status and message should be displayed then.
Password – you can change your password here.
The Miscellaneous Tab
Display public chats group – if checked, you will see a list of public chats in roster window.
Automatic actualizations – every time you run the program it checks for a new version and if there is one available – downloads it automatically.
Chatting with friends in other networks
To chat with users of other networks, it is not enough to log on only to Papla. You must then log to these networks through Papla program. You need to have an account (user id UIN, number + password) in the given messenger or transport. Then you type it into Papla and Papla logs you automatically to other network. This is called activation of the transport.
To activate a transport:
In main windows choose „Services’ icon
From the column on the left side choose desired network (ICQ, AIM etc.). Sometimes there are more than one transports to the network.
In the right part \of the window click ‘Register/Unregister’
in a window choose ‘Register’ and type your user id (e.g. ICQ UIN) and a password
Click ‘Finish’- you’ll get confirmation of successful connection.
Shortly, the list of contacts will be downloaded from the server.
Papla server will remember that you activated external transport and each time you log on to Papla (PC and Mobile) will try to log you also to external network. To cancel this, you must deactivate service in the same way as you activated.
You should remember hwoever that most IM systems do not allow to log simultaneously from more that two machines to the same account so when you log to Papla and have transport activated – and you have the dedicated client of another network running - you will be automatically logged out.
Services
The Jabber network offers a range of services like news, weather, dictionnary etc. It is not possible to list them all – each of the servers can have plenty of them and administrators can add new and remove existing. You can however check the list of available services on the server. Go to ‘Services’, choose the server from the list and then ‘Show list of services’.
Help
There is automatic help available through virtual user ‘Pomoc’. If you send a command to it in a chat window he will provide you the information. The list of available commands follows:
